Contra-flow from the Arab world? How Arab television coverage of the 2003 Iraq war was used and framed on Western international news channels

Wessler, H. & Adolphsen M. (2008). Contra-flow from the Arab world?; how Arab television coverage of the 2003 Iraq war was used and framed on Western international news channels. Media Culture society 30(4): 439–461.

The purpose of this research has been defined by examining to what extent and for what purposes Western news channels make use of information and footage provided by the Arab Satellite Broadcasting. A content analysis was used to analyse all prime-time evening newscasts on BBC World, CNN international (Europe) and Deutsche Welle-TV from 19 march to 1 april 2003 (first two weeks of the Iraq war). Results show  that these prime – time evening newscasts do make use of Arab news sources. It has been noticed  that there is interaction between the two fronts.  Although the use of Arab sources has been noticed, the share of utilizations of an references to ASB is rather small in quantitative terms.
