Regarding the pain of others

Sontag, S. (2003). Regarding the pain of others. New York: Farrar, Straus & Giroux.

In this book, Sontag explains how the images of war and conflict can affect people who are not involved in that conflict. By doing this, Sontag gives specific examples like pictures from the Rwandan genocide and the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. She also gives broad insights about the interaction between photojournalism and objectivity and the sympathy which can be created by shocking images of war and conflict. These insights, together with Sontag’s insights how the overload of images of war and conflict can lead to feelings of desensitization, indifference and habituation, makes her book very useful for my thesis.
